THE GOOD FIGHT

LifeLink Devotions for Tuesday, October 20, 2026

As I wrote yesterday’s devotional I was challenged to write a few more about some subjects that came up in the midst of it. Now I know yesterday was the official end of our study we had been doing but the Holy Spirit has moved in my own heart to understand a few things more clearly.

When Paul told us the three things that identified his life the first one was that he had fought a good fight. Let’s dive into that a little more deeply. In First Timothy chapter 6 verse 12 Paul says, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

As we discovered yesterday Paul is convinced that he did well to fight the good fight of the faith. Now we see that earlier in his first letter to Timothy he told Timothy to do the same thing. In fact he’s telling all of us to do the same thing. Fight the good fight of the faith. But what does that look like?

Paul summarizes the fight of the good faith by telling Timothy to take hold of the eternal life to which you were called. Here we find the key to living a faithful life for Christ. Paul says that you made a confession of faith in Christ, but the confession alone is not sufficient to fight a good fight. We must daily take hold of what we confessed.

We confessed Christ as our Savior who died for our sin and rose from the dead to grant us eternal life. We put our faith in Jesus so that we could have eternal life. But has eternal life captivated our daily life?  Do we daily take hold of the values of eternity and make them the values of our present reality? Does the righteousness of Christ in eternity govern the morality of our life today?

My friends I think we falter here. We have many earthly values that govern our lives. The pursuit of identity. The pursuit of prosperity. The pursuit of acceptance. The pursuit of personal value. But when we confessed Christ as Savior and Lord all of those things were guaranteed to us if we take hold of him every day and let him govern every goal and decision.

Our identity becomes the identity of Christ.

We are promised prosperity in our spirit and soul that will satisfy us through times of financial crisis.

We have been accepted once and for all by Jesus Christ and declared to be a Child of God.

Our value is no longer found in the things of this world but in the perfect value of Christ who now lives in us.

If those things are not firmly grasped every day as a gift of God’s grace, you will be fighting a fight to gain them for the rest of your life and you will lose it all. Fighting the good fight of faith means that you take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and you confessed and that daily God’s eternal values dictate all of yours. So if you’re fighting right now to figure out life, you should turn to Christ and take hold of him. His eternal life will turn all your fights into good ones.
