One of the ways our insecurities manifest themselves in our life is to make us feel like we don’t belong to a greater cause and have no purpose. Our heads tell us this is a lie but our hearts still feel like an unqualified outsider.
In the book of Haggai God instructs the prophet to bring His message to the current governor of Judah named Zerubbabel. The Lord says, “I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother.”
The nation of Israel had been in captivity to Babylon because of the sinful leadership of its previous kings. But now they are back in Jerusalem with instructions to rebuild the temple. But they have been focused on rebuilding only their own lives and houses and the temple was still unrestored.
This is a sad picture of so many lives today. We have been given so much and so many opportunities to follow God’s rebuilding plan for our lives through obedience to His Word, yet we seek to fulfill our own desires first. We are building our little earthly kingdoms and ignoring the building of God’s kingdom. But somewhere there is someone who is listening to the call of God to become His messenger of forgiveness and restoration. Maybe it’s you.
The Lord comes to Zerubbabel and says, “On that day, declares the Lord of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the Lord, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the Lord of hosts.”
There are three lessons for us here:
- The strength of the kingdom you are building for yourself will be destroyed.
- You can be the one who, like a signet ring, represents identity with Christ and carries His authority in a covenant relationship with God.
- You have been chosen by God for this purpose.
In Christ you belong to a greater cause than anything this world offers you. In Christ you have an eternal purpose that can be lived out today. In Christ the Kingdom you build for His glory will never be taken away and will abundantly satisfy your every longing. In Christ God has chosen you. YOU!
And when you live in His identity you will conquer all your insecurities.
