Many followers of Jesus wonder what will happen next in God’s redemptive plan for the world. There are a lot of interpretations and conjectures. I do not claim to have an answer that satisfies every possible connection between all the prophetic Scriptures. But I have found in all my years that when the plain sense makes good sense to not seek any other sense. If the simple understanding of what’s written makes sense, then simply believe it.

Four times in the 38^th chapter of Ezekiel we read the words “on that day.” They all refer to an event that is prophesied to take place immediately before the return of Jesus. Israel will be secure and at peace. The world will seemingly be at peace as well. But a nation led by a leader named Gog would upset everything.

The Lord tells Gog that he would assemble a massive and seemingly unconquerable army. Then we read four “on that day” statements by the Lord.

1. “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme…” The scheme will be to use his army to invade other nations and carry away all their wealth as his own.
2. “Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say to Gog, Thus says the Lord God: On that day when my people Israel are dwelling securely, will you not know it? You will come from your place out of the uttermost parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army. You will come up against my people Israel, like a cloud covering the land.” Gog will invade Israel and seek to overthrow it and remove it completely from the earth’s future. But God has a purpose for allowing this. He says, “In the latter days I will bring you against my land, that the nations may know me, when through you, O Gog, I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.” God is about to reveal to the world that He alone is the only Holy God.
3. “But on that day, the day that Gog shall come against the land of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, my wrath will be roused in my anger.” God is going to take miraculous action as an expression of anger against all who oppose His divine purpose.
4. “For in my jealousy and in my blazing wrath I declare, On that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. …the mountains shall be thrown down, and the cliffs shall fall, and every wall shall tumble to the ground. I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Lord GOD. Every man’s sword will be against his brother. With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him, and I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur. So I will show my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”

The description of Gog’s attempt to overthrow God’s people is the event that immediately precedes the revealing of the anti-Christ to the world and the start of the Great Tribulation. God is again offering mankind an opportunity to turn to Him and repent of their evil. But they don’t. They instead turn to follow a satanic leader into a false peace.

As we observe the world around us, the stage is being set for this event. Jesus is coming soon. Are you ready to follow Him, or will you still, after seeing all of His might and power, follow the ways of the world?
